How to Rig a Tube Bait for Rocky Bottoms

A practical guide to choosing and rigging tube baits around rock, including internal versus exposed hook setups, weight placement, snag control, and hook-setting technique.

Tube baits are at home around chunk rock, bluff ends, riprap, and gravel points. Their compact profile slips between rocks, and the hollow body gives them a natural glide that bass often key on when crawfish are active.

The trouble is that rocky bottoms can turn a good tube presentation into a donation to the lake. The right rig comes down to a simple tradeoff: an exposed hook usually gives you better hookups, while a weedless hook protects you from the worst crevices and brush mixed into the rock.

Start With the Bottom You’re Actually Fishing

I don’t choose a tube rig based on the word “rocky” alone. A clean gravel point calls for a different approach than a steep bank of fist-sized chunk rock with flooded laydowns scattered through it.

Use an exposed-hook setup when the bottom is relatively open and you can maintain contact without constantly dragging through wood or thick vegetation. This is often the best choice on:

  • Gravel and pea-gravel points
  • Clean riprap
  • Open chunk-rock banks
  • Rock piles without much brush
  • Ledges where bass sit on the outside edges of boulders

Choose a weedless, Texas-style tube rig when rock is mixed with cover or when the spaces between the rocks are large enough to eat a jighead. It is especially useful around:

  • Broken rock mixed with laydowns
  • Brush piles on rocky points
  • Jagged boulders and ledges
  • Shorelines with rock, grass, and wood together

Neither rig is completely snag-proof. The goal is to match the amount of hook exposure to the amount of cover, then fish the bait with enough control that it doesn't wedge itself into every crack.

Internal Jigheads: The Standard Exposed-Hook Tube Rig

An internal tube jighead is the classic tube setup. The lead head sits inside the hollow body, leaving the hook shank mostly hidden and the hook point exposed outside the tube.

For an intermediate bass angler, this is the rig I’d start with on clean rock because it is simple, compact, and efficient. The weight stays at the front of the bait, helping the tube reach bottom nose-first and glide or dart when you lift it.

How to rig an internal tube jighead

  1. Choose a jighead that fits the tube cavity without stretching the plastic excessively. For a common 3 1/2- to 4-inch tube, a 2/0 or 3/0 tube jighead is often a sensible starting point.
  2. Insert the jighead into the open rear of the tube, with the hook point facing the direction you want it to exit.
  3. Work the head forward until the line tie reaches the nose of the tube.
  4. Push the hook point through the plastic near the upper side of the tube body. Keep the tube straight rather than twisted.
  5. Check that the line tie is centered at the nose and that the hook point is clear of the plastic.

A straight tube matters more than it may seem. If the bait is crooked on the jighead, it can spin, roll unnaturally, and twist your line.

Why it works on rock

With the weight inside the body, the tube stays streamlined rather than carrying a bulky head outside the plastic. It slides over small rock better than many anglers expect, and the exposed point gives you a direct connection when a bass inhales it.

The downside is obvious: an exposed hook can catch in deep cracks. If you are feeling the jighead repeatedly fall into gaps between large rocks, it is time to lighten up, change your retrieve angle, or switch to a weedless rig.

Texas-Rigged Tubes: Better Protection Around Mixed Cover

A Texas-rigged tube uses an offset worm hook with the point buried lightly in the plastic. The weight may be placed inside the tube body or positioned ahead of it, depending on the presentation you want.

For rocky cover, I prefer an internal tube weight paired with an offset hook. Keeping the weight inside the tube maintains the bait’s compact shape and avoids having an external sinker constantly wedging between rocks ahead of the plastic.

A dependable weedless tube setup

For a 3 1/2- to 4-inch tube, try these starting components:

  • A 3/0 or 4/0 extra-wide-gap offset hook
  • An internal tube weight sized for the depth and wind
  • A soft-plastic tube with a roomy hollow cavity

Rig the tube much like a Texas-rigged worm:

  1. Place the tube weight inside the hollow body, toward the nose.
  2. Insert the hook point through the nose of the tube and bring it out after roughly a quarter inch of plastic.
  3. Slide the tube up the hook shank, rotate the hook, and line up where the point should re-enter the body.
  4. Push the hook point through the tube and bury it just under the plastic surface.
  5. Make sure the body lies straight and the hook has enough gap to clear the plastic during the hook-set.

Some anglers lightly peg the internal weight so it stays at the nose. Others allow it to move within the cavity. A fixed forward weight usually gives a more consistent bottom-oriented presentation, while a little movement can add an irregular fall. On rough rock, consistency is usually more valuable than extra motion.

Weight Placement Controls the Tube’s Action

Weight placement affects more than casting distance. It changes how the tube falls, how well you feel bottom, and how often it snags.

Internal forward weight

This is the most common choice for rocky bottoms. A weight near the tube’s nose helps it fall head-first, crawl over rock, and maintain bottom contact. It also preserves the tube’s natural profile.

Internal forward weight works well when you want to:

  • Hop the bait down a rocky bank
  • Drag it across gravel or small chunk rock
  • Work a tube along a point or ledge
  • Keep the bait close to bottom in wind or deeper water

External weight ahead of the tube

A bullet weight ahead of the tube can be useful when you need a fast descent or a more traditional Texas-rigged feel. But around jagged rock, it adds another hard component that can lodge in cracks. It can also separate from the tube on the fall if it isn't pegged.

I reserve this arrangement for situations where the bottom is more mixed than purely rocky, such as scattered rock and brush, or when I need a heavier presentation to maintain contact.

Choosing weight size

Use the lightest weight that lets you feel bottom and keep the tube in the strike zone. A lighter tube tends to glide and slip over rock more naturally. A heavier one reaches deeper water and holds better in wind, but it wedges more easily and can make the presentation look too abrupt.

As a general starting point, lighter weights suit shallow banks and calmer conditions, while heavier weights make sense for deeper points, current, or windy reservoir days. Let bottom contact—not just casting distance—tell you whether the weight is right.

Reduce Snags With Retrieve Angle and Rod Control

Good tube fishing on rock is less about dragging hard and more about feeling your way along. Most unnecessary snags happen when the bait is pulled straight into a crevice with steady pressure.

Instead, use short movements and give the tube a chance to climb over obstacles.

Try a lift-and-follow retrieve

Make a short rod lift, then lower the rod tip while reeling only enough to maintain light contact. This lets the tube hop forward and fall naturally. Bass often strike as it settles beside a rock.

If you feel the weight start to bind, don't immediately pull harder. Give the bait a little slack, shake it lightly, or move the rod to one side before applying pressure again. A slight angle change will often free the tube without driving the hook deeper into the snag.

Fish from useful angles

Your line angle matters. Casting parallel to a riprap bank or working along the side of a rocky point often helps the tube travel over the contour instead of being pulled directly into every gap.

When possible, reposition the boat rather than forcing the bait through the same snaggy lane. A tube that is hopeless from one angle may come through cleanly from another.

Keep the bait moving, but not racing

A tube should spend time near bottom, but it doesn't need to bulldoze the bottom on every inch of the retrieve. Alternate short drags, small hops, and pauses. That change in pace does two things: it reduces the time spent wedged against rocks, and it gives bass a chance to find the bait.

Hook-Setting Technique Depends on the Hook

The biggest rigging difference shows up when a fish bites.

With an exposed jighead hook

When you feel a bite, reel until the line comes tight and use a firm sweep to the side. You don't need a dramatic overhead swing. The hook point is already exposed, so a controlled sweep drives it home while keeping steady pressure on the fish.

A long, hard hook-set can be counterproductive on short strikes, particularly if the fish has grabbed only the tube tentacles. Staying composed is usually more effective than trying to launch the bass into the next county.

With a weedless Texas-rigged hook

A buried hook point needs more force. When you feel the bite, lower the rod slightly if necessary, reel out slack, and make a firm sweeping hook-set. Continue reeling as you sweep so the hook can penetrate the plastic and reach the fish.

Use enough pressure to clear the hook point, but keep the rod loaded afterward. In rocky terrain, a fish can use the first boulder it reaches as leverage to shake free.

Match the Rig to the Situation

If I were carrying just two tube setups for Great Lakes or Ozark reservoir rock, I’d keep one rod with an internal jighead for clean bottom and another with a weedless internal-weight Texas rig for rock mixed with wood or grass.

That small adjustment covers most situations:

  • Clean gravel, riprap, and open rock: Internal jighead with an exposed point
  • Large cracks, brush, and mixed cover: Internal-weight Texas rig with a buried point
  • Shallow, calm water: Start lighter for a better glide
  • Deep water, wind, or current: Add weight only until you can maintain contact

Check your local hook and weight rules

Before fishing a new lake or crossing into a different jurisdiction, check the current fishing regulations for hook restrictions, bait rules, and any limits on lead tackle. Regulations can vary between waters and can change over time.

The best tube rig for rocky bottoms is the one that reaches the strike zone, stays there without constantly hanging up, and leaves you with enough hook exposure to convert bites. Start with an internal jighead on clean rock, slow down when the bottom gets rough, and move to a weedless setup when the cover starts winning too many battles.
